Performing Arts
About Our Program:
We involve our students in music and drama to develop their abilities in self-expression and their understanding and appreciation of the arts. We have one dedicated evening on our calendar called Fine Arts Night whereby parents are invited to come and see students of all grades perform as well as see their art projects for the year that will be on display.
During the first semester, pre-K through fourth- graders prepare for our annual Christmas musical. All students play an active role in either the musical or dramatic aspects of the presentation.
The pre-K and kindergarten classes perform every spring at the Bellaire National Day of Prayer. In preparation for this event, they learn many patriotic songs.
First and second grade students are introduced to a variety of orchestral instruments, are taught to appreciate classical music and are introduced to some of the great classical composers.
Second through fourth grade students sing in a choir. An honor choir, selected from this larger choir, competes in the ACSI Music Festival. Third- and fourth-grade students apply music theory by playing the recorder. Over the school year, several school and public performances are scheduled.
Fifth graders focus on music theory and performance by learning to play hand chimes and performing publicly in the hand chime choir at the school and in the community. In 2009, they performed before 1,000 attendees of the annual ACSI Conference in Moody Gardens, Galveston.
Sixth and seventh graders make up our band program. Students are guided to choose an instrument that best fits them and then learn how to play that instrument. The band gives several performances over the school year and also goes to various competitions.
Eighth graders focus on drama presentations. The students are responsible for all aspects of a selected production, including costuming, lighting, sound and staging, as well as acting. A performance is staged at the end of each spring semester.
In addition, private music lessons on several instruments are offered on campus after school.
Our stage productions during the past year were both phenomenal successes, and it was a blessing to witness the children perform beyond our highest expectations!
