Community Service

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Requirements: Students in grade 5 must earn a minimum of 12 hours and students in grades 6-8 must earn a minimum of 20 hours of community service per school year.
  • National Honor Society: To qualify for or maintain membership in NHS, students in grade 5 must earn 20 hours and students in grades 6-8 must earn 30 hours of community service by February 1st of that school year.
  • To Be Promoted with Honors: Students with at least a 3.8 GPA (and no detention halls) in grade 5 must earn 20 hours and students with at least a 3.8 GPA (and no detention halls)  in grades 6-8 must earn 30 hours of community service by the last day of school.

 

DEADLINES:

  • HALF of the minimum required community service hours (6 hours for grade 5, 10 hours for grades 6-8) should be submitted to the School Office by the first day of school (upon return from Summer Break).
  • The REMAINING HALF (6 additional hours for grade 5, 10 additional hours for grades 6-8) must be submitted by the last day of school.
  •  Additional hours required to qualify for NHS and graduating with HONORS (see above) must be submitted by February 1st of that school year for NHS or by the last day of school for graduation.

 

REWARDS:

  • If a student submits HALF of the required minimum community service hours by the first day of school (6 hours for grade 5, 10 hours for grades 6-8), they will receive a FREE DRESS PASS.
  • If a student completes ALL of the required minimum hours by the first day of school (12 hours for grade 5, 20 hours for grades 6-8) they will earn a FREE DRESS PASS and a NO HOMEWORK PASS.
  • Students with the highest number of community service hours in each grade will be recognized at the End of Year Awards Chapel.

 

DOCUMENTATION:

  • Community hours must be recorded on the Veritas Community Service Report Form and submitted to Mrs. Delgado.
  • All community service hours must be approved by Mrs. Delgado or Mrs. El-Issa before they are applied to the student’s total.  Please contact Mrs. Delgado at [email protected] if you have questions.

 

LIMITATIONS & EXCLUSIONS:

  • All service hours must have a verifier’s signature to receive credit. Parents may not verify hours for their students. Only non-profit organizations or adults NOT related to the student qualify as verifiers.
  • To qualify as community service no compensation may be accepted.
  • No more than 8 hours of community service per day may be earned.
  • Mrs. Delgado or Mrs. El-Issa have the discretion to deny credit for community service hours not deemed appropriate or for excessive community service hours of like kind.

 

SPECIAL NOTES:

  • Report cards will be held at the end of the year until ALL minimum community service requirements are met.
  • Students in grade 8 who have not met their minimum community service requirements will not be allowed to exempt any final exams.

 

Community Service hours are earned from June through the following May of the current school year.
