Elementary

The first years of schooling are the grammar stage, when the building blocks for all other learning lay. In the elementary school years -- what we commonly think of as grades one through four -- the mind is keen to absorb information. Children at this age actually find memorization fun.

During this period, education primarily involves learning facts. We teach the rules of phonics and spelling, rules of grammar, poems, the vocabulary of language, the stories of history and literature, descriptions of plants and animals and the human body, the facts of mathematics - the list goes on. We teach Latin beginning in 3rd grade.  Latin is a language which opens a window on Western civilization and gives the student an advantage in learning other languages later. Knowing Latin also opens the door for studies of science, medicine, law and other disciplines. The fact-filled lessons are integrated with music and art and are full of hands-on/minds-on activities.

The elementary curriculum includes Bible, math, English, history, science, Spanish (1-4), Latin (3-4), computer, art, music and PE (Physical Education).

We use an extensive array of curriculum that includes Shurley Grammar, which introduces all the grammar rules through jingles; Veritas Press in Bible and history; ACSI in science, math and spelling; BJU in reading, among others.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is used to promote a love of reading; Accelerated Math (AM) stimulates those who learn math easily but also supplements the curriculum for those who find learning math challenging.

Our students have numerous opportunities to participate in a variety of competitions, including science and history fairs, spelling bee, speech meet, creative writing and Math Olympics.
