Achievements

Excellence in education begins and ends in the classroom, and we spare no effort to develop critical thinking skills and prepare our students to meet the challenges ahead. Our classical method focuses on teaching “with the grain,” which means instruction is tailored to the student’s learning style at each age level. Our goal is to teach our students how to think and how to learn, not to indoctrinate them by teaching what to think and what to learn. In this way, students at Veritas are equipped with the "tools of learning".

Our students compete against other Christian schools in competitions such as spelling bee, art, creative writing, math Olympics, music festival, science fair, speech meet and algebra league. Veritas students always rank high in these competitions. Our Art department, for example, brought in 10 gold medals at the last competition and our eighth-grade algebra one won first place in the state, then competed in the five-state region and won first place again!

Many Veritas students every year qualify for the DukeTIP talent search program by attaining a percentage higher than 95 in certain portions of the Standardized test.

In 2011-12, students from grades 4, 5 and 7 who qualified, are the following: Ayala Angel,  Fogarty Bronwyn, Jaques Lily, Guette Hunter, Lisner Noah,  Kourchev Sasha, Sinclair Mary,   Orozco Elena, Coker Anna Kate, Mueller James, Calabrese Michael, Paul Caroline, Hughes Caroline,       Poage Schuyler,  Houk Stephanie,  Thomas Kelly, Orozco Isabel and Williamson Turner.

In April 2012, our school will be administering for the first time, the CTB TerraNova, Standardized Achievement Test instead of the Sanford Test. This change has been recommended by ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) and many Christian schools across the nation and around the globe have adopted it.

The CTB TerraNova 3 is used by 42% of the schools testing in the United States, which is a definitive majority of the testing demographic. Its content is closely aligned to state and national standards. It is designed to measure concepts, processes, and objectives taught throughout the nation in Reading, Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The ACSI Edition includes the Bible Assessment Subtest and five additional PLUS tests for assessment in Word Analysis, Vocabulary, Spelling, Language Mechanics, and Math Computation.  This complete testing program will provide teachers and parents with valuable and in-depth information in all subject areas.

This assessment program also includes new services that will help our school make the most effective use of testing results. These enhancements include a quick turn-around time for schools and parents in receiving testing results and professional development for our teachers. An online Parent Network is also being developed, beginning with the 2012-13 school year.

Since achievement testing is such a critical component of our school’s instructional program, TerraNova 3 and the complete assessment program will provide valuable information to you and to your child’s teacher about his/her academic progress. It also becomes a teaching resource for our faculty, allowing us to collect student data that, in turn, helps us make wise decisions in meeting the learning needs of your child.
