Faculty and Staff
The administration, faculty and staff of Veritas Christian Academy of Houston are professing Christians, active in their local church. All are degreed with many having graduate degrees. Administration

Head of School: Mrs. Lamia Raad serves Veritas Christian Academy as Head of School. Mrs. Raad has a M.Ed. in math education and a B.S. in mathematics from the American University of Beirut. She also has education doctorate hours from the University of Florida. She has over twenty years of teaching experience, three of them at the University of Houston. She also has twelve years of experience as an administrator. She has a Lifetime All Levels Administration Certificate from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) as well as a Lifetime Mathematics Secondary Teaching Certificate. In addition, Mrs. Raad is a member of the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS) and she serves on ACSI and SACS-CASI accreditation teams. Mrs. Raad is one of the founding members of Veritas.

Dean of Students: Mr. Rick Wooster serves Veritas as Dean of Students. He oversees students discipline and attendance. Mr. Wooster has a B. A. degree from the University of Houston in psychology and Spanish and holds an ACSI Secondary Teaching Certificate. He has been teaching for twelve years, eight of which at Christian schools. Mr. Wooster teaches in Middle School (see more information below). This is his sixth year with Veritas.

Admissions Director/ Elementary Dept Head: Mrs. Amy Leonard serves Veritas as the Admissions Director and the Elementary Department Head. She oversees grades PreK through the Fourth Grade and is in charge of testing and all admission procedures. In addition, Mrs. Leonard also serves as the PTF (Parent Teacher Fellowship) liaison, curriculum coordinator and HISD (Houston Independent School District) testing coordinator. Mrs. Amy Leonard has a B.S. degree in education from Louisiana State University, an ACSI Elementary Teaching Certificate and a Texas Educator Certificate in elementary education. She has over twenty-three years of experience teaching in both public and private schools. This is her ninth year with Veritas.

Middle School Dept Head: Mrs. Molly El-Issa serves Veritas as the Middle School Department Head. She oversees grades five through eighth grade and teaches in Middle School (see more information below). She holds a B.A. degree in educational psychology from the American University of Beirut. She was a director of a center for language instruction in Canada for one year and has been teaching for nineteen years. Mrs. El-Issa has an ACSI Elementary Teaching Certificate and an Elementary Administrator Certificate. This is her ninth year with Veritas.

Athletic Director: Ms. Joy Jones serves Veritas as the Athletic Director. She oversees and coordinates all of the athletic, physical education programs as well as Summer Camp at Veritas. She also is the National Honor Society and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Advisor. Ms Jones teaches science in Middle School (see more information below). She has a B.A. in general studies from Louisiana State University and a M.Ed. from Houston Baptist University. She also holds an ACSI Secondary Science Teaching Certificate as well as a Texas Educator Certificate in science. She has taught and coached in Christian schools for twelve years. This is her seventh year with Veritas.

Technology: Mrs. Jan Heuer serves Veritas as the Technology Director. She holds a B.B.A. from Sam Houston State University and an M.B.A from the University of Texas at Austin. This is her tenth year teaching at a Christian school but she has over eighteen years of experience in Information Technology. She holds a lifetime Texas Educator Certificate in computer information systems and a Lifetime ACSI Secondary Computer Science Teaching Certificate. Mrs. Heuer teaches computer to grades PreK through the 8th grade. This is her nineth year with Veritas.

Financial Manager: Mrs. Marilyn Hughes serves Veritas as the Financial Manager. She has a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee and is a Certified Public Accountant. In addition to many years of experience in public and corporate accounting, she previously worked at a Christian school establishing and running their accounting system. This is her fifth year with Veritas.

School Nurse: Mrs. Barbara Boucher, RN, serves as our school nurse. Mrs. Boucher has a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Virginia. She has many years of experience in Newborn ICU and pediatric clinic settings. Her children have graduated from Veritas, and she was involved as a parent volunteer during their time at the school. This is her third year working at Veritas.

Office Manager: Mr. Chad Legare is our Office Manager and Middle School Bible teacher. Mr. Legare has a Bachelors of Arts and a Master in Theological Studies from Houston Baptist University. He has an ACSI teaching Certificate and has four years of experience in office management. In addition, he is a fervent teacher of the Word at his church. This is his first year at Veritas.
Elementary Teachers

Pre-K: Mrs. Becky Mc Bee is our Pre-K homeroom teacher. She has served Veritas previously as a Cheerleading and Track coach. She also led the Girls Bible Study in Middle School and has a love for children of all ages. She has received some training from Neuhauss in preschool development. This is her third year with Veritas.

Kindergarten: Mrs. Christyne Poage holds a BA from San Diego State University and holds a State Certification in Elementary and Special Ed. She has taught for two years with 4 and 5 years old and has substituted extensively for our teachers in the past. Having had training at Neuhauss Center, Mrs. Poage has worked as a private Dyslexia tutor for 2 years. This is her first year teaching Kindergarten at Veritas.

First: Mrs. Valarene Whitman holds a B.A. in elementary education from Houston Baptist University. She has taught at Christian schools for twenty six years. Mrs. Whitman holds a lifetime Texas Educator Certificate in elementary education and an ACSI Teaching Certificate. This is her fifth year with Veritas.


Third: Ms. Virginia Schneider holds a B.A. from the University of Teas in Austin and an M.A in Teaching from Texas Woman's University as well as a Texas State Teaching Certificate. Ms Schneider will also be coaching Basketball and Volleyball in Middle School. She has taught in public school and this is her first year with Veritas.

Fourth: Mrs. Kim Berger holds a B.A. from Stephen F. Austin State University, a Texas Educator Certificate in elementary education and an ACSI Teaching Certificate. She has ten years of teaching experience in a Christian school. This is her ninth year with Veritas.

Fourth: Mrs. Elise Leiss holds a B.S. in History and Education from the University of Texas and has ACSI and State of Texas Teaching Certification. Mrs. Leiss has previously taught in public schools. In addition, Mrs. Leiss is our Cheerleader coach. This is her second year with Veritas.

Elementary Science and Latin: Mrs. Gwen Moton holds a B.A. in elementary special education from the University of Houston and an ACSI Elementary Teaching Certificate as well as a Deaf/Hard of Hearing Teaching Certificate. She has fifteen years of teaching experience in both public and private schools. Mrs. Moton teaches Grades 1-4 Science and Grades 3-4 Latin. In addition, Mrs. Moton teaches cooking in After Care & Summer Camp. This is her ninth year with Veritas.

Middle School Teachers

Fifth: Ms. Joy Jones is the 5th grade homeroom teacher and teaches Middle School science. She has a B.A. in general studies from Louisiana State University and a M.Ed. from Houston Baptist University. She also holds an ACSI Secondary Science Teaching Certificate as well as a Texas Educator Certificate in science. She has taught and coached in Christian schools for twelve years. She is also faculty sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athlete and the National Honor Society. Coach Jones is our Athletic Director and in charge of our Summer Camp. This is her seventh year with Veritas.

Sixth: Mrs. Molly El-Issa is the 6th grade homeroom teacher and teaches math and Bible in Middle School. She holds a B.A. in educational psychology from the American University of Beirut. She was a director of a center for language instruction in Canada for one year and has been teaching for nineteen years. Seventh: Mr. Coney DeHart is our seventh grade homeroom teacher and he teaches Math, Bible and History in Middle School. He holds a B.S. in General Studies and an M.A. in Secondary Mathematics from Louisiana Tech University. In addition, he holds an M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary. He has taught High School Algebra in Louisiana, and taught Algebra 1 and Geometry at Veritas. He has a Louisiana and Texas State Teaching certification in mathematics as well as an ACSI Teaching Certificate in mathematics. In addition, Mr. DeHart is the coordinator of the Robotics Club and the Boys Basketball coach. This is his second year with Veritas.

Eighth: Mr. Bradley Sewell is the 8th grade homeroom teacher and teaches History, Bible and Logic in Middle School. He holds a B.A. in history from Southeastern College of Wake Forest in North Carolina and an M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. He also holds an ACSI Secondary Teaching Certificate. Mr. Sewell is the Faculty Sponsor of the Middle School Student Council, the Seventh Grade Texas History trip as well as the Eighth Grade London trip. He is also the Yearbook Advisor. This is his third year with Veritas.

FIne Arts & Middle School English: Mrs. Neala Fogarty teaches Language Arts in Middle School. She is also our Director of theatrical and musical productions. Mrs. Fogarty holds a B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies from University of Houston with specializations in English, Reading, and Psychology. Mrs. Fogarty holds Texas Teaching Certification in both Elementary and Secondary Education and Texas Teaching Certificate in Dance. She has taught and coached for fifteen years in both public and private Christian schools. This is her third year with Veritas.

Middle School English: Miss. Ashley Jorlando is one of our Middle School English teachers. Ms. Jorlando has graduated from John Carroll University with a degree in English. She has a Texas State Certification as well as an ACSI teaching certificate. She has taught previously taught tenth grade American and British Literature. Ms. Jorlando also coaches Lacrosse at a local High School. This is her first year at Veritas.

Spanish/Latin: Mr. Rick Wooster teaches our Spanish and Latin programs. Mr. Wooster has a B. A. from the University of Houston in psychology and Spanish and holds an ACSI Secondary Teaching Certificate. He has been teaching for twelve years, eight of which at Christian schools. Mr. Wooster is also our Dean of Students in charge of students’ discipline. This is his sixth year with Veritas.
Specialty Teachers

Physical Education: Mrs. Laura Utecht teaches Physical Education to grades K-8 and is the sponsor of our JAM Jump Rope Team. She holds an All-Level Physical Education degree from Corpus Christi State University with fourteen years of experience. She holds a Lifetime State Teaching Certificate and an ACSI All Level Physical Education Teaching Certificate.This is her fourth year with Veritas.

Art: Mrs. Marilyn Roane directs our art program at Veritas. Mrs. Roane has a B.A. degree in studio art from the State University of New York. She has been actively involved in the field of art most of her professional life. Mrs. Roane has worked at both The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and has taught art to both college and grade school students. Mrs. Roane has an ACSI All Levels Art Teaching Certificate. This is her eighth year with Veritas.

Music: Brenda Merrick teaches in PreK-5th grade music and choir. Mrs. Merrick has a B.S. degree in Music Education from BJU University with a piano proficiency and a minor in English. She has over twenty-one years of experience teaching music. Mrs. Merrick has an ACSI all level Music certificate. This is her fourth year with Veritas.
Support Personnel


Mrs. Gladyss Sakr is our elementary teacher’s assistant. She assists the lower school teachers and teaches French to PreK and K. This is her fifth year on the Veritas support staff.

Ms. Debbie Swindler is the founder and owner of Bravo School of Music. Bravo instructs band programs at 10 schools in Houston as well as offers private instruction for all instruments and for voice students. Ms. Swindler is the band director at Veritas for grades 6th and 7th Band. This is her second year with Veritas.

Mrs. Cristina Lopez is the school janitor. Mrs. Lopez is also a pastor's wife. Her husband pastors a local Hispanic church in the community. This is her eighth year with Veritas.

Mrs. Jo Ann Parkett is our independent Food Services Manager. She is an experienced caterer and has worked in Christian schools for the last thirty years. This is her ninth year serving with Veritas.

Mrs. Lety Ayala is our After School Director.
